CBD Oil vs CBD Spray: Which is right for you?

Jul 29, 2023Vidal de Wit

CBD is a natural substance that may relieve pain, reduce inflammation, support mental health, and reduce the symptoms of various conditions.

It's available in a range of forms, and two of the most popular are CBD oil and CBD spray. Each form offers a different dosage and different effects, so here's what you need to know about how to choose the right product for you.

What is CBD oil?

"CBD" stands for cannabidiol, and is naturally derived from the cannabis plant. To make CBD oil, it's extracted from raw plant seeds and stalks, then diluted with a carrier oil, such as olive, avocado, or coconut.

At Dutchnaturals, we like using hemp and hempseed oil in our CBD oil for its sweet, natural odor!

CBD oil is usually sold in a small bottle with a dropper, so that you can get the dosage right.

What is CBD spray?

CBD spray often has exactly the same ingredients as CBD oil, but it comes in a spray bottle.

It's also usually a different concentration. Unlike CBD oil, the dosage is already calculated for you—you just have to press the spray nozzle.

There are several different kinds of CBD spray for different needs.

  • Oral sprays. Oral CBD sprays are sprayed into the mouth. Your body quickly absorbs the CBD through the mucous membranes (that's the soft, protective tissue inside your mouth and nose). You'll feel a full-body effect. CBD sprays are often flavored, easy to use, and very discreet.
  • Topical sprays. Unlike oral CBD spray, topical CBD spray has a localized effect. You spray it onto the skin for a local soothing effect.
  • Nasal sprays. Nasal CBD spray comes in a bottle with a thin nozzle that's designed for administration through the nostrils. Like oral CBD spray, it will provide you with a full-body effect.

CBD Oil vs CBD Spray

Here's what to consider when you're choosing between CBD oil and CBD spray.

Which is easier to use?

Our verdict: CBD Spray is easier to use

Both forms of CBD are relatively easy to use, however some people prefer CBD spray over CBD oil.

The oil can be a little messy to use, especially if you're still getting used to the dropper. You also have to be careful about hygiene, and not allowing the dropper to touch your tongue.

CBD spray is extremely easy to use. All you have to do is spray it under your tongue and wait for the spray to be absorbed.

Both CBD oil and CBD spray come in small, discreet bottles which are convenient when you're on the go. You can also choose to take CBD oil or spray by adding it into food or drink.

Which is easier to dose?

Our verdict: CBD Spray is easier to dose

CBD spray comes in a bottle with the dosage already calculated. The spray nozzle controls how much oil comes out each time, so you don't have to do any of the maths.

Measuring out the correct dose of CBD oil can be slightly more difficult. It can take a few tries to get comfortable with the dropper tool.

However, some people prefer CBD oil because it gives them more control over the dosage. If you prefer to choose your own dosage, make sure you understand how much CBD oil to take.

Which is more versatile?

Our verdict: CBD oil is more versatile

CBD oil and CBD spray are both extremely versatile ways to enjoy the benefits of CBD. For example, CBD spray comes in a range of formats. You can choose between oral, topical, and nasal sprays for different dose methods and effects.

CBD oil is perhaps more adaptable, though. You can choose your own dose. You can swallow it, or take it under your tongue. You can even use it to enhance regular food and drink.

Which works faster?

Our verdict: Both work at the same speed

CBD oil and CBD spray seem to work at the same rate. There hasn't been much research into which method works faster.

However, some argue that taking CBD sublingually (under your tongue) helps your body to absorb it quickly, because it filters through your mucous membranes, directly into the bloodstream. You can use both CBD oil and CBD spray sublingually.

Which is better for beginners?

Our verdict: Both are great options for beginners

For many people, the choice between CBD oil and CBD spray comes down to dosage.

CBD spray is easy to use and tends to have a small concentration of CBD. It's a simple, low-impact way to try out CBD.

However, some people know that they want to try a larger dose—in which case, CBD oil is a good choice. You can use the dropper to decide your own dosage.

It's also worth thinking about what dose method you prefer. Some people struggle with an oil dropper, while others just don't like sprays! Start with what feels comfortable for you.

CBD oil vs CBD spray: Which is right for you?

When you're choosing a CBD product, you'll need to think about:

  • Dose method
  • Dosage
  • Flavour
  • Whether you want a localized or full-body effect
  • … and most importantly, what you're using it for.

All of these factors work together.

For example, if you know that you want a strong dose to support healthy sleep, then oil might be right for you—because it has a full-body effect and you can choose the dosage.

If you want to relieve chronic pain in a specific body part, then you might prefer spray—because it's localized and you can start with a light dosage.

You can try different CBD oils and CBD sprays to find what works best for you.

FAQs

Should I take CBD oil under my tongue?

Holding CBD oil or CBD spray under your tongue is a popular way to take CBD. Some claim that holding CBD under your tongue for about a minute helps your body to absorb it quickly.

This is because it may give time for the CBD to filter through your mucous membranes into the bloodstream. If you swallow the CBD right away, it has to pass through your digestive system before it reaches your bloodstream, which could be slower or less efficient.

A study in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology found that CBD could be effectively and safely absorbed under the tongue. However, we're still waiting for more research on how exactly our bodies absorb, use, and respond to CBD.

Other studies suggest that CBD has great potential in medicine, but it will take time for scientists to understand and perfect how it works.

What are the side effects of CBD spray?

CBD spray does have some mild, potential side effects. These can include:

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth

You should always talk to a doctor before taking CBD oil or CBD spray if you have any prescribed medications. CBD is not recommended for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Before taking a CBD oil or CBD spray, make sure you understand the correct dosage. You can also look for a CBD Certificate of Analysis from the supplier. This will tell you about the ingredients they use and how their CBD production is regulated.

Are CBD and CBD oil the same?

CBD and CBD oil are not exactly the same thing. CBD oil contains CBD, but it also includes a carrier oil.

CBD is short for cannabidiol. That's one of many different cannabinoids—chemical elements of the cannabis plant—which can have positive health effects.

CBD oil is an oil extracted from the cannabis plant. It contains high levels of CBD. So, although it's not the same thing as pure CBD, it carries the same benefits and is easy to use.
