What is CBD oil for cats?
CBD oil for cats is made with extracts from the hemp plant. Usually it consists of a certain amount of Cannabidiol (CBD) in the form of a CBD Paste or Crystals; mixed with a carrier oil for easier administration and dosing. In the case of DNH’s CBD oil for cats, the high quality Cannabidiol is mixed with both hemp seed oil, as well as high grade salmon oil. This makes Dutch Natural Healing’s feline CBD tastier for your furry friend. Which results in the fact that most cats will happily take their hemp oil supplement, instead of making a fuss about it.
How does CBD for cats work?
Cats possess an endocannabinoid-system (ECS), just like us humans. Essentially this is a communication network which helps regulate all sorts of processes within the body. This varies from pain to hunger and everything in between. The ECS works with receptors which are spread all over the body; and endocannabinoids that work as signaling substances and bind to these receptors to cause a certain effect. This is how pain is regulated for example, or your cat's happiness.
Benefits of cat CBD
In some cases however, the body is not able to produce or process enough of these endocannabinoids on its own. And as we’ve learned, a lack of these substances in the body might lead to all sorts of discomforts and distorted communication in the body. Though anecdotal evidence from consumers and a growing body of scientific research show that stimulating these receptors with vegetal cannabinoids from hemp, might help bring back the balance needed for our bodies - and that of your beloved pet - to thrive.
Accordingly, it’s safe to say that hemp oil for cats might provide felines with the same benefits as we humans experience from CBD. This means that it might have a positive effect on the perception and cause of pain, inflammation, potentially offer anxious cats mental tranquility and more. Helping (older) cats to regain their mobility and more active lifestyle; which contributes hugely to the cat’s quality of life.
Some customers even claim that CBD oil for cats might even help reduce seizures in epileptic cats. While there is no scientific proof to back this up, it doesn’t hurt to try! Please note that it might be advisable to discuss your cat's CBD intake with your veterinarian.
Is CBD safe for cats?
While cats can perfectly handle and process vegetal cannabinoids like Cannabidiol (CBD); you can’t simply give your cat some of your hemp oil. Because science has shown us that terpenes - hemp’s aromatic substances which help support the cannabinoid’s entourage effect - are actually very toxic for cats. In fact, it could even kill your beloved pet if you’re not careful.
Hence why DNH’s hemp oil for cats is completely terpene-free. Making the product safe to use for your cat and other pets that might not handle terpenes as well as humans - or even dogs - do. In any and all cases please be careful with home-brews and THC-rich hemp oils too. As too much of this substance might not be healthy for your pet either; and wil definitely give it an uncomfortable feeling.
Dosing CBD oil for cats
When it comes to dosing CBD hemp oil for cats, it is advisable to start low. After all, your cat doesn’t know what’s wrong with it; nor what you’re giving it to hopefully improve it’s quality of life. By starting with a low dose, you eliminate the risk of unwanted side-effects your cat might experience. A good starting dose is for example one drop (±1mg) of DNH’s CBD oil for cats per 5kg body weight, two times a day. After administration, closely monitor the effects and increase the dosage with one drop, if needed, after 10 days.
Potential side-effects of hemp oil for cats
CBD is not lethal nor dangerous to cats. However, it might give your furry friend an uncomfortable feeling. In higher doses, Cannabidiol could make your cat drowsy, sleepy and reduce its reaction time. While we humans can think rationally and know where this feeling comes from when we accidentally take a ‘CBD overdose’. Cats will not understand. Hence why Dutch Natural Healing advices cat owners to start with a low dose and slowly let your cat get used to the substance. When you slowly build up a tolerance, your cat will not notice any negative side-effects.
CBD for other animals
Besides cats - and us humans - there are also other animals that can benefit from hemp oil. That’s why at Dutch Natural Healing you’ll also find specific CBD oil for dogs and CBD oil for horses - among other CBD for pets.
